Axiom Cushions provide a cohesive family of seating products designed with a “Best in Class” approach, all based on the Science of Seating.
Every cushion was developed using the core design elements of direct loading and surface tension reduction, achieved through pre-contoured shapes, high-end quality materials and superior cover design. It’s important for all cushions, from general use and above, have a properly designed pre-contoured shape. That’s why we cooperated with Georgia Tech to study anthropometrics.
The result? Designs that have the best possible cushion shapes to fit a wide range of sizes and needs.

Surface Tension Reduction
Effective pressure distribution and stability begin with how well the body immerses into the cushion.
As the foam compresses, greater immersion increases contact area and creates a more stable base of support.
Carefully selected foam and cover materials help manage pressure around bony prominences.
The result is improved comfort, stability and pressure management.
Pre-Contouring
Polyurethane foam is formed by gas production during urethane polymerisation.
Its elastic cells allow the foam to behave like a spring.
The foam rebounds when the load is removed.
In a flat cushion, greater immersion causes greater compression. This creates a higher reaction force in the most compressed areas.
Pre-contouring the cushion to match the body’s shape helps reduce these forces and improve pressure distribution.
Anthropometrics
Pre-contouring is effective, but every body is different in size, shape and tissue distribution.
Cushion design must account for these differences to provide the right support and stability.
By understanding pelvic anatomy and supporting the trochanters, the load around the ischial tuberosities can be reduced.
The result is a more stable, individualised seating experience.
