Active participation with help from the Crocodile All-Terrain size variant

At the beginning of November, we met the outdoor-loving 6-year-old, Andreas, along with his mother, Anne, and his 9-year-old big brother, Eskild.

Andreas was diagnosed with spastic tetraplegic cerebral palsy at GMFCS level III. He experiences challenges with walking and is a toe walker, so he wears braces every day. Andreas has not yet experienced any cognitive challenges and his fine motor skills are also good considering his diagnosis, however he tires quickly.

Andreas was diagnosed when he was eighteen months old. However, the family had already noticed early signs of delayed motor development at the age of nine months, which set him apart from his twin brother, Laurits. Therefore, Andreas received help from physiotherapists from an early age. They show up regularly to train with him in the kindergarten, as well as doing weekly training on either land or as aquatic training in a pool. The family feels that Andreas' courage and desire to challenge himself have helped him enormously.

Andreas running

The entire family of five live close to nature in Hovedgård, Denmark, and they love being outdoors. At home Andreas often enjoys a game of football in the backyard with his two brothers. And whenever he needs a break, either from the game of football or from any of their other outdoor activities, the flip down seat on his Crocodile is ready for him to rest on.

At the weekend, the family love making bonfires, toasting marshmallows or baking twisted bread over the fire, no matter the season. His father has always been an avid angler, and he has passed that interest on to his children and wife. They all enjoy being in the open outdoors, going to the beach, flying with Andreas' running kite or going fishing together.

In the summertime the family goes sailing, bringing Andreas’ Crocodile with them to ensure that Andreas can move around independently wherever they go ashore. When we met three of the five family members on the grounds around Bygholm lake in Horsens, Andreas showed us just how much he enjoys moving around freely with his new Crocodile, running, exploring and playing ball.

Andreas is a determined and resilient boy who looks to his brothers and friends for inspiration. His achievements are a testament to his unwavering drive to copy their actions and follow in their footsteps. At times, the family's most important job is to step in, offering him the necessary breaks – both mentally and physically – until he’s ready to embark on his next adventure with renewed energy and strength.

Twice a month Andreas joins the Tumbling Stars, a project started by Parasports Denmark for children aged three to six with physical disabilities. The project aims to improve the children’s gross motor function and coordination through sports – and Andreas loves it!

Andreas playing soccer

With the Crocodile AT size, Andreas’ world expanded significantly. He loves the freedom it gives him navigating curbs and bumps, playing football in the field, running through mud and strolling through the forest without worrying about limitations or different surfaces. The fact that it comes in red was the cherry on top. Red is Andreas’ favourite colour, and his excitement was undeniable when he saw it for the first time.

Walking

Walking is more than just a developmental milestone. It’s a gateway to independence, exploration and connection. For children, it’s an essential milestone that opens the door to countless opportunities for growth – physically, emotionally and cognitively.

Most children start walking between eight and eighteen months old, during one of their most rapid phases of development. Before they can walk, crawling or other forms of mobility often confine their perspective to the floor. But walking dramatically changes this. The moment a child stands upright, the world takes on a new dimension and becomes full of possibilities.
