Abstract
To maintain the walking ability is essential for most people. Our homes and environments are not adapted for wheelchairs. Our reach, vision, communication and independence are directly affected when we have to manage from a sitting position. The importance of a walker can not be pointed out strong enough.
We see more elderly people every day using walkers. Studies also show that even if a person is walking more when using a walker, the number of falling accidents decrees. The medical and personal care for one hip fracture equals the costs of 200 walkers.
When prescribing a walker it is important to train the client how to use the walker. Just as a client needs walking training when receiving a prostheses after a leg amputation. To train how to climb curbs or make a turn in an efficient way will improve the walking ability, safety and independence.
